The Nelson Izu-shi Friendship Society again hosted a booth at Nelson’s annual Lakeside Park Canada Day celebrations. Thanks to the help of our member volunteers, many kids enjoyed making origami and writing their wishes for the July Tanabata Star Festival. Adults and kids took home special pieces of calligraphy with their names written in Japanese. People enjoyed looking at pictures of our sister city of Izu-shi and learning about our activities here in Nelson, including seasonal cultural events and the Friendship Garden in Cottonwood Falls Park.
As a special treat, we were able to share pictures of Canada Day in Japan that we had just received from our friends in the Izu-shi Association for Friendship Relations. They had celebrated our sister city friendship by serving Nelson’s Oso Negro coffee at their cultural education booth on a beautiful sunny July 1st in the Nelson Station Square in the Niji no Sato park in Izu-shi. We really appreciated this chance to tell people about Izu-shi, our sister city since 1987, and to share Japanese-Canadian culture as part of Canada’s multicultural society. Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for organizing the celebration and to everyone who stopped by!
